What to do right now

If anyone is hurt or in danger, call 911 first.

  1. Shut off the main water valve. It is usually where the water line comes through the basement wall or up through the floor, next to the meter.
  2. If the water heater is leaking, turn its gas control to pilot or switch off its breaker, then close the cold water valve on top of the tank.
  3. If water is near outlets or the electrical panel, stay out of that room. Turn off the power at the panel only if you can reach it standing on dry ground.
  4. If you smell gas, get out of the house and call the gas company from outside.
  5. If sewage is backing up, do not use any sink, tub or toilet until the line is cleared.
  6. Move what you can out of the water and take photos for your insurance.

What counts as an emergency

  • Water coming through a ceiling or a wall
  • A burst or split pipe
  • Sewage backing up into a tub, a drain or the basement floor
  • A water heater leaking from the tank
  • No water anywhere in the house
  • A toilet overflowing that will not stop

What can wait for a daytime visit

  • A dripping faucet
  • A toilet that runs between flushes
  • A slow drain that still drains
  • Less hot water than there used to be

What it costs to come out

A $149 trip fee after hours, credited to the repair if you go ahead (sample)

When we get there

  1. The plumber calls when they leave, with the time they expect to arrive.
  2. They find where the water is coming from and stop it first.
  3. The repair is priced in writing before it starts, and the trip fee counts toward that price.
  4. If a part is not on the truck, you get a temporary repair and a set time to come back.

From customers who called after hours

  • A pipe split in the basement on a Sunday night. A plumber picked up, told me where the shutoff was, and was at the door before the water reached the furnace.

  • The main line backed up into the tub near midnight. They came out, cleared it, and showed me the camera video of the root before they left.

  • Our water heater let go on a holiday morning. The person who answered was the plumber who came, and his price on the phone was the price on the bill.
