We are in Albany, and we measured the local web.

Albany and the Capital Region

Before we pitched a single business here, we ran our own gate on 115 small business sites across the Capital Region. Most of those we could measure miss Google's phone lab line, and more than half of those we could weigh are over 3 MB. Here is what we found, and how to see where yours stands.

115 sites reviewed. 98 of 102 miss Google's lab line.

What we found

Between 17 and 19 September 2026 we ran the same 50-plus-check gate we run on our own work against 115 small business websites in and around Albany. Trades mostly: heating and cooling, electrical, masonry, paving, gutters, basement work, mold, energy. The kind of business that lives on phone calls. On 25 September 2026 we measured every site again, with Google's lab test and one unthrottled browser load each.

115

Capital Region sites reviewed

102

returned a usable figure on Google's lab test

98

past Google's 2.5 second line on that test

7.75s

lab median for the biggest thing on the first screen to appear

1.3s

unthrottled load median on our own connection, 104 measured

3.3 MB

median page weight; 55 of 102 over 3 MB

The lab figures are Google's Lighthouse mobile test, a simulated slow 4G connection on a slower phone, run 25 September 2026: 37 of the 102 took more than ten seconds on it. The unthrottled figure is one browser load of each site on our own fast connection the same day, on a computer and with no slowing applied, and only 11 of the 104 measured took more than three seconds. The lab test is a stress test, not real visitor data. You can run the lab test on any address yourself at pagespeed.web.dev. Every figure here is counted by our script speed-stats.mjs from the measurement stored for each site. We are not naming the businesses. Every one of them can have their report for free by asking.

Speed is not the only thing we check.

Why it matters here

The same gate looks at whether the phone number is a tap-to-call link, whether there is a contact form to find at all, whether the site is secure, whether it can be read by someone using a screen reader, and whether Google has been told the business exists.

Albany, and the towns around it.

Where we work

The studio is in Albany. We work remotely, which means a client in Guilderland and a client in Saratoga get the same service, and neither pays for anyone's drive time. The towns we know well enough to write about:

Albany, Colonie, Guilderland, Bethlehem and Delmar, Troy, Schenectady, Niskayuna, Latham, East Greenbush, Rensselaer, Cohoes, Watervliet, Clifton Park, Ballston Spa, Saratoga Springs.

If you are outside that list, that is not a problem. The work is the same wherever you are. It just means we will ask you more questions about your market instead of assuming we already know it.
